It ain’t gonna happen

You could stay up all night trying to read one more blog post, watch one more video, learn just one more thing that will make you better, smarter, more connected.

You could pack just one more slide into your presentation in hopes of saying everything you hope to say.

You could write just one more paragraph in an attempt to be complete and leave nothing out.

Here’s the thing, though: Even if you do all of these things, you’re still going to miss stuff–good stuff, important stuff. You can try all you want to know it all and say it all, and it just ain’t gonna happen. There’s just too much to know and say. There are literally not enough hours in the day.

Today, the real skill is knowing what to leave out and what to forgo. Have the confidence to know that if you do your job well today, you probably know enough, and you’ll probably have the chance to continue to conversation another day.

You can’t do it all. Nor should you try.

  1. Great note. It is easy to get overwhelmed with all the information that is available out there. Especially in an (emerging) field such as social media. I always take a last glance at Hootsuite before I go to bed. I don’t think it does me any good. 😉

As we speak, I am attending a regional president elect training for Rotary and I am learning A LOT… and I am completely overwhelmed with ideas. I keep writing things down as “must do this” and “must do that” and “don’t forget to tell the club about this.” Time to sort it all out. This is a timely note for me.
